Class Rating Instructor (CRI) Multi-Engine (ME)

The PA34 Seneca II / III is used for our multi-engine instructor training

The cockpit of the PA34 Seneca II / III is well equipped for both IFR / VFR flight


The holder of a CRI certificate for multi-engine aeroplanes my exercise the privileges of the certificate to carry out instruction for class or type ratings. A CRI cannot instruct ab-initio students only those who already hold a licence

Pre-Course Entry

An applicant for a CRI certificate for multi-engine aeroplanes shall:

(a) hold at least the licence and the rating for which flight instruction is to be given

(b) be entitled to act as PIC on the aircraft during flight instruction

(c) have flown at least 500 hours flight time as pilot of aeroplanes*

(d) have flown at least 30 hours as PIC on the applicable type or class of aeroplane

*Not including microlights

Ground Training

35 hours of ground tuition including 25 hours of teaching and learning and 10 hours of technical training including revision of technical knowledge, the preparation of lesson plans and the development of classroom/simulator instructional skills

During the course the student instructor will practise giving ground lessons to the FIC instructor giving the course

The training shall be integrated with the flight training so that the maximum benefit is gained from time spent in the air

Flight Training

5 hours of flight instruction in multi-engine aeroplanes

Assessment of Competence

On successful completion of the training a recommendation will be made for the applicant to complete the assessment of competence. This must be carried out within 6 months of completion of the training. Failure to do so will result in the need for extra training. The assessment of competence will be conducted by an FIE. The assessment of competence schedule is given below

1. This section is divided into two parts:
# The applicant is required to give a lesson under test conditions to other student(s), one of whom will be the examiner. The test lesson is to be selected from items of section 1. The amount of time for preparation of the test lesson is agreed upon beforehand with the examiner. Appropriate literature may be used by the applicant. The test lesson should not exceed 45 minutes
# The applicant is tested orally by the examiner for knowledge of items of section 1 and the core instructor competencies as given in the instructor course
2. This section comprises additional exercises covering ME instructional privileges and is completed in a ME aircraft or FFS or FNPT II simulating a ME aircraft. This section, if applicable, is done in addition to sections 2, 3 and 5
3. These sections comprise exercises to demonstrate the ability to be an instructor, and are chosen by the examiner from the flight syllabus of the instructor training course. The applicant is required to demonstrate instructor abilities, including briefing, flight instruction and de-briefing
4. The safety module is to comprise one or more exercise(s) from the following topics: weather appreciation, flight in poor visibility, calculation and appreciation of safety altitude, stall/spin awareness and navigation techniques

Privileges (CRI ME)

To instruct for the issue, revalidation or renewal of a class or type rating for non-complex non-high performance single-pilot aeroplanes, when the privileges sought by the applicant are to fly in single-pilot operations

The privileges of a CRI are restricted to the class or type of aeroplane in which the instructor assessment of competence was taken. The privileges of the CRI shall be extended to further classes or types when the CRI has completed, within the last 12 months:

(a) 15 hours flight time as PIC on aeroplanes of the applicable class or type of aeroplane

(b) 1 training flight from the right hand seat under the supervision of another CRI or FI qualified for that class or type occupying the other pilot’s seat

Within the 12 months preceding the expiry date of the CRI certificate:

(a) conduct at least 10 hours of flight instruction in the role of a CRI. If the applicant has CRI privileges on both single-engine and multi-engine aeroplanes, the 10 hours of flight instruction shall be equally divided between single-engine and multi-engine aeroplanes


(b) receive refresher training as a CRI at an ATO


(c) pass the assessment of competence for multi-engine or single-engine aeroplanes, as relevant

For at least each alternate revalidation of a CRI certificate, the holder shall have to comply with the requirement of (c) above

When an assessment of competence is required for revalidation of an CRI certificate, an applicant who fails to achieve a pass in the assessment before the expiry date of the CRI certificate shall not exercise the privileges of that certificate until the assessment has successfully been completed

Hours flown as an examiner during skill tests or proficiency checks shall be credited in full towards revalidation requirements for all instructor certificates held


Within a period of 12 months before renewal:

(a) receive refresher training as a CRI at an ATO


(b) pass the assessment of competence
