FI (R) - Removal of the Restriction (R) / Upgrade fom AFI to FI  
 

General

When issued with an FI (R) or AFI rating the candidate has certain privileges (see Privileges) and restrictions (see Restrictions (R)) applied to the rating. In order to remove the restrictions from the FI (R) or AFI rating the candidate is required to compete the following items:

(a) Complete at least 100 hours flight instruction

(b) Supervise at least 25 student solo flights (not first solo day, night or navigation)

(c) Recommendation from the supervising FI

(d) Complete Instructor Form 2 (SRG1133)


This is a paperwork exercise and does not involve any flight test but will incur a fee payable to the UK CAA.

Privileges - (Applies equally to FI (R) and AFI)

The following privileges apply:

(i) ab-initio students for issue of PPL (A)
(ii) on those parts of an integrated course at PPL (A) level
(iii) for class and type ratings SE aeroplanes
(iv) night flying (only if night instructor qualified)
(V) aerobatics (only if aerobatic instructor qualified)

Notes:
1. To instruct for the IMC rating / IR the candidate must hold a stand alone IRI rating in addition to the FI (R) / AFI. The candidate may then only instruct licence holders for the IMC rating / IR not ab-initio students.
2. To instruct for the MEP class rating the candidate must hold a stand alone CRI ME rating in addition to the FI (R) / AFI. The candidate may then only instruct licence holders for the MEP class rating not ab-initio students.

Restrictions - (Applies equally to FI (R) and AFI)

The following restrictions apply:

(i) must be supervised by an FI nominated to the UK CAA
(ii) can not authorise first solo flight by day or night
(iii) can not authorise first solo navigation by day or night
