UK Military QFI Conversion to JAA FI Rating  
 

General

Prior to commencing a conversion course it is advisable to contact the CAA for a personal assessment. In addition, LASORS, available from most Pilot Shops (see Links) will give you further information. However, from our experince, the following requirements are normally what the CAA require:

 

 

 

Pre-Course Entry Requirements

Before commencing FI conversion training an applicant must satisfy the course pre-entry requirements laid down below:

  • Hold a valid UK or JAR issued aeroplane pilot licence containing current class and type ratings valid for the aeroplane to be used for the training course and test; a qualification to fly at night as PIC (if night instructional privileges sought) and a valid medical certificate (appropriate to UK licence held)
  • Completed at least 200 hours of flight time of which at least 100 hours shall be as PIC if holding a professional pilot licence or 150 hours PIC if holding a PPL (A)
  • Meet the theorectical knowledge requirements for the JAR CPL (A)
  • Completed at least 30 hours flight time on SEP aeroplanes of which at least 5 hours shall have been completed during the 6 months preceding the pre-entry flight test
  • Have received 10 hours instrument flight instruction of which not more than 5 hours may be instrument ground time in a device qualified and user approved flight and navigation procedures trainer or flight simulator
  • Have completed at least 20 hours of cross country flight as PIC including a flight totalling not less than 540 km (300 nm) in the course of which full stop landings at 2 different aerodromes shall be made

Flying and Ground Training

Training at an FTO covering topics and exercises contained in the PPL (A) syllabus at the descretion of the FIC instructor sufficient to pass the relevant elements of a FI Skill Test.

On-Track Aviation recommends 15 hours of theorectical knowledge and 3 hours of flight training.

Instructor Skill Test

On satisfactory completion of the flight and ground training the candidate must pass an Instructor Skill Test with an FIE (Flight Instructor Examiner). The contents of the Skill Test include:

(a) Theoretical Knowledge Oral including a 45 minute lecture (Subjects chosen from the JAA PPL (A) syllabus)

(b) Pre-Flight Briefing (Exercise from JAA PPL (A) syllabus)

(c) The Flight (To include pre-briefed exercise from JAA PPL (A) syllabus) aerobatics, spinning and IF (including a precision or non-precision approach)

(d) Post Flight De-briefing (Students performance)

(e) Result and candidate de-brief

Validty

3 years.

Privileges

FI - Instruct ab-initio students and licence holders in accordance with the instructor rating(s) held.

Revalidation

Complete 2 of the following requirements:

(a) completed 100 hours of flight instruction during period of validity including at least 30 hours within the 12 months preceding expiry, 10 hours of this 30 hours shall be instrument flight instruction if teaching for IR

(b) attend an Instructor Refresher Seminar within the 3 year rating validity period

(c) pass an Instructor Proficiency Check within 12 months preceding rating expiry

Note: Each alternate revalidation shall include the Instructor Proficiency Check as one of the two requirements.

Renewal

If the rating has lapsed then the applicant must complete both an Instructor Proficiency Check and attend an Instructor Refresher Seminar within 12 months.
