Converting a Non JAA FI Rating to a JAA FI Rating

General

This guidance applies only to converting basic flight instructor rating privileges for single engine aeroplanes (land) for which JAR-FCL licences issued by the UK are available. Basic in this context means the privilege to give instruction for the issue of a PPL (A) and night flying instruction in single engine aeroplanes. Pilots seeking to qualify for other instructing privileges provided for in JAR-FCL must meet the requirements set out in JAR-FCL 1 in full.

Pre-Course Entry Requirements

Before commencing FI conversion training an applicant must satisfy the course pre-entry requirements laid down below:

  • Hold a valid pilot licence issued by a non JAA Member State including a valid aeroplane flight instructor rating
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Hold a valid UK or JAR issued aeroplane pilot licence containing current class and/or type ratings valid for the aeroplane to be used for the training course and test; a qualification to fly at night as PIC (if night instructional privileges sought) and a valid medical certificate (appropriate to UK or JAR licence held)
  • Completed at least 200 hours of flight time of which at least 100 hours shall be as PIC if holding a professional pilot licence or 150 hours PIC if holding a PPL (A)
  • Meet the theorectical knowledge requirements for the JAR CPL (A)
  • Completed at least 30 hours flight time on SEP aeroplanes of which at least 5 hours shall have been completed during the 6 months preceding the pre-entry flight test
  • Have received 10 hours instrument flight instruction of which not more than 5 hours may be instrument ground time in a device qualified and user approved flight and navigation procedures trainer or flight simulator
  • Have completed at least 20 hours of cross country flight as PIC including a flight totalling not less than 540 km (300 nm) in the course of which full stop landings at 2 different aerodromes shall be made
  • Pass a specific pre-entry flight test with an FIC approved FI within the 6 months preceding the start of the course. This test assesses the ability of an applicant to undertake the training course

Flying and Ground Training

The training comprises 30 hours of theorectical knowledge and 15 hours of flight training covering all topics and exercises contained in the FI (R) course (see Flight Instructor FI(R)

In addition, a pilot whose non JAA FI rating includes night flying instruction privileges may convert these privileges by further training comprising of 2 hours of ground instruction covering matters specific to giving flight instruction at night and a minimum of 1 hour of flying at night during which the applicant will demonstrate the ability to teach exercises 12 (take off and climb to downwind position) and 13 (circuit, approach and landing) at night.

Instructor Skill Test

On satisfactory completion of the flight and ground training the candidate must pass an Instructor Skill Test with an FIE (Flight Instructor Examiner). The contents of the Skill Test include:

(a) Theoretical Knowledge Oral including a 45 minute lecture (Subjects chosen from the JAA PPL (A) syllabus)

(b) Pre-Flight Briefing (Exercise from JAA PPL (A) syllabus)

(c) The Flight (To include pre-briefed exercise from JAA PPL (A) syllabus plus other exercises or parts there of)

(d) Post Flight De-briefing (Students performance)

(e) Result and candidate de-brief
