Instrument Rating Instructor (IRI)

General

Non flight instructors may complete the IRI course to enable them to instruct licence holders only (no ab-initio students) on single pilot SE aeroplanes for the issue/renewal/revalidation of a UK IMC rating or an IR. To instruct on ME single pilot aeroplanes they must also complete the CRI (ME) course (also see IRI Wishing to Conduct Training for ME IR below).

An FI (R) wishing to have the 'No Applied Instrument' restriction removed shall complete this course and pass the Instructor Skill Test. An FI on the other hand only need complete the shorter FI (IRI) course, see FI (IRI)

Pre-Course Entry Requirements

Pilots wishing to give instruction for the issue of the IR or IMC Rating will be required to have:

(a) hold a valid IR

OR

(c) completed at least 200 hours by sole reference to instruments

AND

(d) completed an approved course of training and pass a skill test

Whilst these requirements are to be met prior to the application for a IRI rating it is assumed that the candidate will possess the above requirements except item (d) before commencing the course.

Ground Training

35 hours of ground instruction including Teaching and Learning and Training Administration and subjects associated with instrument flying and radio navigation.

During the course the student instructor will practise giving ground lectures covering the above subjects to the FIC instructor giving the course.

Flight Training

10 hours flight instruction in an aeroplane or flight simulator.

Instructor Skill Test

On satisfactory completion of the flight and ground training the candidate must pass an Instructor Skill Test with an FIE. The contents of the Skill Test include:

(c) The Flight (To include pre-briefed exercise from IR / UK IMC rating syllabus plus other exercises or parts thereof)
