| Valid Licence
For a licence to be valid, a pilot must hold:
(a) Current medical certificate appropriate to the licence
(b) Have a valid Class or Type rating
This may be any Class or Type rating e.g. SEP (land) is acceptable on ATPL or CPL |

Valid Licence Re-Issue Requirements
A licence may be re-issued within a period of 60 days prior to the expiry date of the licence. Holders of a lifetime UK PPL should note that the licence itself is unexpiring, but the privileges conferred by it, and any ratings in it, may only be exercised when the licence and the appropriate ratings are valid.
A UK or JAR-FCL pilot's licence will be re-issued for a further period of 5 years validity subject to meeting the following:
- Hold a medical certificate appropriate to the licence being re-issued valid for the first day of issue of the new licence
- Hold a valid Certificate of Test (C of T), Certificate of Experience (C of E) or Certificate of Revalidation (C of R) for any Type / Class rating (see note 1 and 2)
OR
- Hold a medical certificate appropriate to the licence being re-issued valid for the first day of issue of the new licence
- Have held a valid C of T, C of E or C of R for any Type / Class rating that has not expired by more than 5 years (see note 1 and 2)
Notes:
1. Applicants who are currently flying under the privileges of a non-UK ICAO licence or are a current Qualified Service Pilot (QSP) and are flying an aircraft type endorsed within their UK or JAR-FCL licence, may have their licence renewed by holding a valid medical certificate appropriate to the licence being re-issued.
2. Applicants who are not flying an aircraft endorsed within their UK or JAR-FCL licence may not have their licence renewed until such time as an appropriate valid medical certificate and C of R are obtained. Applicants may either renew an existing rating within their UK or JAR-FCL licence or may wish to transfer a Type / Class that they are currently flying under the privileges of their non-UK ICAO licence.
Expired Licence Re-issue Requirements
If the holder of an expired UK National or JAR-FCL pilot's licence has held a valid C of T, C of E, or C of R for any Type / Class rating that has not expired by more than 5 years, then only the appropriate valid medical certificate must be obtained to re-issue the licence.
If the holder of an expired UK National or JAR-FCL pilot's licence has not held a valid C of T, C of E, or C of R for any Type / Class rating that has expired by more than 5 years (see note 3) they may not have the licence re-issued until such time as an appropriate valid medical certificate and C of R are obtained. Applicants may either renew an existing rating within their UK or JAR-FCL licence or may wish to transfer a Type / Class that they are currently flying under the privileges of their non-UK ICAO licence.
Note 3:
Where an applicant can show that they currently fly under the privileges of a non-UK ICAO licence or are a current QSP and are flying an aircraft type endorsed within their UK or JAR-FCL licence, they may have their licence re-issued by holding a valid UK or JAR-FCL medical certificate as appropriate to the licence.
Transfer of Type / Class Ratings
Type Ratings (e.g. B747-400, BN2T, C525)
A non-JAA State Type rating may be transfered to a UK issued pilot's licence subject to:
(a) 500 hours flying experience as pilot on type operating as P1 or P2 appropriate to rating required (Pilot Under Training (PUT) may not be counted)
(b) Operational experience as pilot on type within the preceding 5 years
(c) Pass a Proficiency Check on type
(d) Have met the requirements of JAR-FCL 1.250 (type rating multi-pilot conditions):-
i) At least 100 hours as PIC of aeroplanes
ii) Hold a valid multi-engine IR aeroplanes
iii) Hold a certificate of completion of a Multi-Crew Co-Operation (MCC) course
iv) Have met the theoretical knowledge requirements for the issue of an JAR-FCL ATPL (A)
Applicants who hold a valid Type rating but do not meet the experience requirements above will be required to complete a course of training at a Type Rating Training Organisation (TRTO). The CAA may consider a reduction in the training required upon the recommendation of the TRTO Head of Training. Applicants will be required to pass the written theorectical knowledge examination and a Skill Test.
Class Ratings (e.g. SEP (land), MEP (sea), TMG)
A non-JAA State Class rating may be transfered to a UK issued pilot's licence subject to:-
(a) 100 hours flying experience on the Class
(b) Operational experience as pilot on type within the preceding 5 years
(c) Pass a Proficiency Check on type
(d) Have completed at least 70 hours as PIC of aeroplanes
Applicants who hold a valid Class rating but do not meet the experience requirements above will be required to complete a course of training at an Flying Training Organisation (FTO) at the discretion of the Head of Training. Applicants will be required to pass the written theorectical knowledge examination and a Skill Test.
Appropriate Medical Certificates
Where the requirement is to have an appropriate valid medical certificate then the CAA expect the following medical certificates to be held:
Re-issue of an ATPL / CPL / BCPL - Class 1 medical certificate
Re-issue of a PPL - Class 1 or 2 medical certificate
