Revalidation / Renewal Requirements
For revalidation of Flight Instructor and Instrument Rating Instructor Ratings the holder shall fulfil 2 of the 3 requirements listed below:
- Completed at least 100 hours of flying instruction during the 3 years preceding the date of the rating expiry, 30 hours of which must be within the 12 months preceding the expiry date of the rating
- Of the 30 hours, 10 hours shall be instruction for the IR if IR instructional privileges to be revalidated (does not apply if you only teach for UK IMC rating)
- Attend an Instructor Refresher Seminar within the 3 years preceding the date of the rating expiry (see note)
- Pass a Proficiency Check with a Flight Instructor Examiner (FIE) within 12 months preceding the expiry date of the rating
An instructor proficiency check must be included as one of the requirements at every alternate revalidation
After the initial issue of an FI (R) rating the holder must include a proficiency check as one of the requirements at the first revalidation
- If the rating has expired then the renewal shall be by attending an Instructor Refresher Seminar and passing a Proficiency Check with an FIE
Holders of both Helicopter and Fixed Wing instructor ratings need only attend one seminar covering either helicopter or fixed wing aspects
FI Renewal Package
On-Track Aviation Limited can provide a total renewal service which consists of the Instructor Seminar and Instructor Proficiency Check. The flight test may be conducted on your own aircraft at your home airfield. For cost click Prices
Instructor Seminars Open to Non-Instructors
The Instructor Seminars are primarily aimed at FIs but the information included in the seminar would also benefit any current licence holder. Therefore, On-Track are happy to allow any current licence holder to attend the 2 day seminar. It must be noted that availability for FIs must take preference and non-instructors will be able to attend where spaces are available. The cost of attendance for non-instructors is the same as for FIs
Programme
The seminar is organised in accordance with the requirements laid down in JAR-FCL. The seminar will cover 2 days and will include a minimum of 12 hours of syndicate work, presentations, and directed study. Formal sessions will allow for a presentation time of up to 45 minutes followed by 15 minutes for questions. It is an interactive programme and is designed such that all delegates gain the maximum benefit from their time at the seminar. Candidates are required to attend all sessions of the seminar in order to qualify for the Certificate of Attendance and if relevant the revalidation / renewal signature on their instructor rating. The subjects covered include:
- JAR-FCL
- Human factors relating to the instructor/student teaching environment
- AAIB
- Flight Safety
- Standardization of instructional techniques
- Teaching and Learning
- Lesson Preparation / Visual Aids
- Instrument Flying
- Navigation
- Helicopter topics
- Aviation Medicine
- Personal/Aircraft Documentation
- Multi-engine topics
- Forced Landings
Administration
You will be sent an information package which is designed to give you all the information you require in order to fully prepare for the seminar. A name badge and a workbook will be given to you on arrival. Please bring the following items with you:
- Personal flying logbook(s)
- Licence(s) - bring all JAA/UK licences (see note)
- Identification bearing a photograph of the candidate eg. passport, airline ID, etc
- Completed questionaires
Note: Please ensure that your licence only contains current and valid pages and that all the old pages and certificates are removed prior to attending the seminar. This will make the task of checking your licence much easier
-
In addition, you may find it useful to refer to your own notes during the syndicate work sessions particularly when preparing the short lesson (maximum 15 minutes). It is also worth thinking about what sort of topic(s) you may wish to cover but the final decision will be up to the syndicate as a whole. The lesson will be presented as a syndicate to the other delegates. It is strongly recommended that you bring the following materials with you:
- Pens, pencils and paper to take notes/prepare a lesson
- Pens for use on OHP transparency, white board and flip chart
- Laptop computer - if you wish to use Power Point for your lesson
- Instructor course notes/book(s)
- Aircraft technical notes/book(s)
The lesson, maximum 15 minutes duration, shall be given by each syndicate in front off the rest of the candidates/staff. Each syndicate will then be debriefed with the emphasis on teaching techniques and technical content. This is your opportunity to pratice your teaching skill and remember it is not a test.
A variety of visual aids will be available to you at the venue including:
- White board and pens
- Flipchart and pens
- OHP and screen
- Transparency film and pens
- XGA projector for Power Point presentations
- Aeroplane/Helicopter models
On completion of the seminar you shall be issued with a Certificate of Attendance which can be placed in your logbook. Should you wish to have your instructor rating revalidated you must ensure that:
- You have completed an Instructor Form 3 (SRG1135) (download from CAA website www.caa.co.uk) (see note 5)
- Your licence, SEP/MEP rating(s) and medical are valid and current
- Clear logbook evidence of having completed either:
- Instructor proficiency check within the last 12 months of rating validity (see note 3)
- 100 instructional hours in the last 3 years including 30 hours in the last 12 months of rating validity (see note 1)
- Of the 30 hours, 10 hours shall be instruction for the IR if IR instructional privileges to be revalidated (see note 1 and 2)
Notes:
1.
FIs holding both ME and SE instructional privileges can log the hours in either ME or SE aircraft
2. Not applicable if you only teach for the UK IMC rating
3. An instructor proficiency check must be included as one of the options at every alternate revalidation
4. If you hold both Helicopter and Aeroplane instructor ratings you only need to attend one seminar covering either helicopter or fixed wing aspects, your choice
5. If you are renewing (i.e. it has expired) your instructor rating do not complete section 6 Instructional Flying Experience. If you are revalidating by experience, remember that the hours relate to to the 3 year and 12 month periods preceding the expiry of your FI rating - not preceding the Seminar. If, at the time of the Seminar, you meet the hours criteria, then complete section 6. If you don’t yet meet the criteria (e.g. the rating has 3 months to run and you have only 10 hours’ instruction in the previous 9 months) leave section 6 blank. As soon as you have the necessary experience, complete section 6 and present the from, with your logbook, to your nearest FIE who can then sign section 5B and the Rating-Certificate of Revalidation page in your license
Logbooks and licences will be taken in at registration on day one and returned at the end of the seminar. Due to the large number of logbooks and licences to be checked in the time allowed instructor rating revalidation will only be possible where the completion of the requirements is clearly logged. Therefore, candidates are strongly advised to bookmark the FI flight test in their logbooks before attending the seminar
