Instrument Landing System (ILS) is
one of the most common approaches used
at airports today
|
|
By removing the 'No Applied Instrument' instruction restriction
from your FI rating you will be able to teach ILS approaches |
|
Become a more marketable
FI by gaining an IRI rating |
General
The addition of the Instrument Rating Instructor (IRI) to the FI rating allows the holder to instruct for the UK IMC rating and the IR on single pilot SE aeroplanes. To be able to teach on single pilot ME aeroplanes the FI must also hold ME instructional privileges, see FI (CRI) ME
An FI wishing to remove the 'No Applied Instrument' instruction restriction shall complete this course and pass the Instructor Skill Test. An FI (R) shall complete the IRI course instead, see IRI
Pre-Course Entry Requirements
Pilots wishing to give instruction for the issue of the IR or IMC Rating will be required to have:
(a) hold a valid IR or IMC rating or hold a UK CPL / ATPL
AND
(b) completed at least 200 hours flight time under IFR and may include a maximum of 50 hours in a simulator
OR
(c) completed at least 50 hours (10 hours for IMC rating instruction) by sole reference to instruments
AND
(d) hold a current unrestricted FI Rating (not an FI (R))
(e) completed an approved course of training and pass a skill test
Whilst these requirements are to be met prior to the application for a FI IRI rating it is assumed that the candidate will possess the requirements above except (e) before commencing the course.
Ground Training
10 hours of ground instruction on subjects associated with instrument flying and radio navigation.
During the course the student instructor will practise giving ground lectures covering the above subjects to the FIC instructor giving the course.
The training shall be integrated with the flight training so that the maximum benefit is gained from time spent in the air.
Flight Training
- 5 hours flight instruction in an aeroplane or flight simulator.
Instructor Skill Test
On satisfactory completion of the flight and ground training the candidate must pass an Instructor Skill Test with an FIE. The contents of the Skill Test include:
(a) Theoretical Knowledge Oral including a 45 minute lecture (Subjects chosen from the IR / UK IMC rating syllabus)
(b) Pre-Flight Briefing (Exercise from IR / UK IMC rating syllabus)
(c) The Flight (To include pre-briefed exercise from IR / UK IMC rating syllabus plus other exercises or parts thereof)
(d) Post Flight De-briefing (Students performance)
(e) Result and candidate de-brief

FI IRI Wishing to Conduct Training for ME IR
FI IRIs who wish to conduct training for the ME IR are also required to have met the qualifications for an FI (CRI) ME in accordance with JAR-FCL 1. Both the FI IRI and FI (CRI) ME courses may be combined. The flight training for each course remains unchanged but the ground training changes to a minmum of 15 hours. |
