All our multi-engine training is conducted
on PA34 Seneca II / III aeroplanes
|
The PA34 Seneca is used by many CPL / IR
Flying Training Organisations (FTO)
as their primary training aeroplane
|
|
General
Flight Instructors (FI) - not FI (R) - wishing to give instruction in multi-engine (ME) aeroplanes shall complete the FI (CRI) ME course. In orther words adding ME instuctional privileges to the FI rating. It is a shorter course than the CRI ME as the holder has already completed the Teaching and Learning elements on the initial FI course.
Pre-Course Entry / Application Requirements
Pilots wishing to give instruction in multi-engine (ME) aeroplanes will be required to have:
(a) a current aircraft rating to act as PIC of the aeroplane on which instruction is to be undertaken
(b) flown at least 500 hours flight time as pilot of aeroplanes
(c) hold a current unrestricted FI rating
(d) flown at least 30 hours as PIC on the applicable type or class of aeroplane prior to commencing the course
(e) completed an approved course of training and pass a skill test
Notes:
1. Whilst the requirements of (a) to (c) are to be met prior to the application for a FI (CRI) ME rating it is assumed that the candidate will possess them before commencing the course
2. The requirement of (d) shall be met prior to commencing the course. ME Student Pilot-in-Command (SPIC) time is not allowable towards this 30 hour requirement when adding ME instructor privileges to an FI under UK CAA (Ref LASORS H1.4)
Ground Training
The mandatory training for the FI (CRI) ME rating requires a total of 10 hours (UK) or 25 hours (JAA) of ground instruction in subjects associated with the operation of multi-engine propeller aircraft. It includes elements which are related to the type of aeroplane to be used on the course.
During the course the student instructor will practise giving ground lectures covering the above subjects to the FIC instructor giving the course.
The training shall be integrated with the flight training so that the maximum benefit is gained from time spent in the air.
Flight Training
The flight training element of the FI (CRI) ME rating course consists of 5 hours
Instructor Skill Test |
|
Training is conducted on PA34 Seneca II / III |
On satisfactory completion of the flight and ground training the candidate must pass an Instructor Skill Test with an FIE. The contents of the Skill Test include:
(a) Theoretical Knowledge Oral including a 45 minute lecture (Subjects chosen from the MEP class rating syllabus)
(b) Pre-Flight Briefing (Exercise from MEP class rating syllabus)
(c) The Flight (To include pre-briefed exercise from MEP class rating syllabus plus other exercises or parts thereof)
(d) Post Flight De-briefing (Students performance)
(e) Result and candidate de-brief

Privileges
To instruct ab-initio students for the issue of a Class or Type rating and to conduct differences training.
Validity
Valid for 3 years (runs concurrently with the candidates FI rating).
Revalidation (the rating has not lapsed)
Complete 2 of the following requirements:
(a) completed 50 hours of flight instruction during period of validity including at least 15 hours within the 12 months preceding expiry, 10 hours of this 15 hours shall be instruction for an IR if privileges to instruct for IR are to be revalidated (see note 1)
(b) attend an instructor refresher seminar approved by CAA within the 3 year rating validity period
(c) pass an FI proficiency check within 12 months preceding rating expiry (see note 2)
It is required that an FI skill test be completed at each alternate revalidation. For example, if FI revalidation in 2008 is by seminar and (a) or (c) then the revalidation in 2011 shall be by FI skill test and (a) or (b).
Notes:
1. The 10 hours IR instruction can be completed in either in a SE or ME aeroplane if both SE and ME instructional privileges are held.
2. The holder of both SE and ME instructional privileges does not need to complete 2 separate revalidation proficiency checks. Either a flight in a SE or ME aeroplane will be acceptable. Which ever is completed in the air the other will be examined by oral questions on the ground. e.g. Fly a SE aeroplane and be asked questions on ME aeroplane.
Renewal (the rating has lapsed)
Complete both the following requirements within 12 months preceding rating renewal:
(a) attend an instructor refresher seminar approved by CAA
(b) pass an FI skill test
Note: The holder of both SE and ME instructional privileges does not need to complete 2 separate renewal skill tests. Either a flight in a SE or ME aeroplane will be acceptable. Which ever is completed in the air the other will be examined by oral questions on the ground. e.g. Fly a SE aeroplane and be asked questions on ME aeroplane. |
