Instructional Techniques for the Flight Instructor by Alan Newton, John Halstead
(ISBN 0-9542751-0-1)

Prior to commencing training for the Flight Instructor (Restricted) Rating and Associated Additional Qualifications all our students receive a copy of our training manual, Instructional Techniques for the Flight Instructor, written by two of our most experienced FIEs. This training manual complements all our instructor courses. It is a working document used by both our instructors and students and its A4 loose leaf design makes it easy to amend and simple to use. The format is similar to the Royal Air Force AP3225 series of Instructor and Student Study Guides used by the military flight schools.

On-Track Aviation is the only FTO outside the military which provides such an instructor/student training manual for its students relating directly to the courses of training provided. The training manual is published by On-Track Aviation Limited and available to the general public by mail order. To purchase a copy click here

Teaching and Learning

This section discribes how adults learn and explains the various methods available to teach both in a classroom and in an aeroplane. The use of questions, visual aids and speaking skills are covered in depth. There are chapters on training methods and some basic rules of instructional techniques.

JAA PPL (A)

This section describes in detail how to teach each of the exercises in the JAA PPL (A). Each exercise comprises a board brief followed by text covering the development of the exercise, what you are required to teach and how to teach it, and the important teaching points. The exercises are based on the PA28 but can be adapted for any training aircraft.

IMC Rating/IR, Night Qualification, Aerobatics, Multi-Engine Piston Rating, Close Formation Flying, Tailwheel Conversion, Seaplane

All these sections follow a similar format to the JAA PPL (A). A pre-flight briefing followed by text describing how to teach the various exercises. All the exercises are based on the PA28 except for the Aerobatics (T67 Firefly), Tailwheel Conversion (Chipmunk), Seaplane (Husky A-1 Amphibian) and the Multi-Engine Piston Rating (PA34). Once again they can be adapted to your own training aircraft.
